Puglia begins olive harvest amid fight against food fraud

The olive harvest has officially commenced in Puglia, Italy, marked by an event at the Taurino agricultural farm in Squinzano. The launch involves regional agricultural officials and Coldiretti representatives, including Pietro Piccioni and Costantino Carparelli, alongside Puglia's Agriculture Councilor, Francesco Paolicelli.

Beyond marking the start of the season, the event serves as a platform to address critical challenges facing the sector, such as the impact of heatwaves, water shortages, and rising production costs. A primary focus is the fight against food fraud and the mislabeling of foreign products as Italian olive oil.

Coldiretti is calling for stricter supply chain controls and enhanced traceability to protect both consumer health and farmers' incomes. Proposed solutions to combat origin fraud include advanced inspection technologies such as magnetic resonance, genomic mapping, and isotopic mapping to ensure transparency and fair pricing for Italian producers.
