Italy heatwave impacts agriculture and local food trends

Italy is experiencing intense heatwaves, particularly in Sicily and Puglia, with temperatures in areas like Bitonto and Marsala expected to reach between 38 and 43 degrees Celsius. This extreme weather is driving several regional developments.

In the agricultural sector, Coldiretti has warned that high temperatures and drought are increasing the proliferation of harmful pests, such as the citrus whitefly and Drosophila suzukii, posing risks to fruit, vine, and olive crops. This increased pest pressure may lead to higher monitoring and defense costs for farmers.

Conversely, the heat is fueling a trend in the food industry known as ‘agrigelaterie’. These artisanal gelato shops are seeing a boom by using local, seasonal ingredients directly from farms, such as donkey, goat, and sheep milk, as well as regional specialties like honey, citrus, and even extra virgin olive oil to shorten the supply chain.
