Extreme weather and agricultural risks in Puglia
Overview
In mid-August 2026, the Puglia region of Italy experienced a series of severe weather events. Initially, the Puglia Civil Protection Section issued a yellow weather alert for the central Adriatic sector, warning of hydrogeological risks, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds. During this period, local authorities also increased enforcement regarding public order, targeting illegal camping and traffic violations.
By late August, the weather conditions shifted toward extreme heat. A red alert was maintained by the Ministry of Health as temperatures in the Bari region and surrounding countryside reached as high as 43°C. This heatwave and accompanying drought conditions created additional challenges for the agricultural sector. Coldiretti Puglia reported that the heat increased the presence of harmful organisms, such as the citrus whitefly and red spider mite, threatening regional crops including olives, vines, and vegetables.
As the heatwave persisted through late August, temperatures in areas such as Bitonto were expected to remain between 38 and 43°C. Coldiretti warned that the combination of high temperatures and drought was increasing the proliferation of pests like the citrus whitefly and Drosophila suzukii, which may lead to higher monitoring and defense costs for farmers.
In response to the climate, a trend known as ‘agrigelaterie’ has emerged in the food industry. These artisanal gelato shops are utilizing local, seasonal ingredients directly from farms—including donkey, goat, and sheep milk, as well as honey, citrus, and extra virgin olive oil—to shorten the supply chain.
