Puglia implements new strategy for table grape and wine sectors

The Puglia region is developing a new strategic plan to strengthen its agricultural sectors, specifically focusing on table grapes and viticulture. As Italy’s leading producer of table grapes with over 23,000 hectares cultivated, the region aims to improve supply chain organization, enhance international promotion, and increase the economic recognition of its products.

Regional Agriculture Councilor Francesco Paolicelli has met with fruit and vegetable industry representatives to address profitability challenges. Key issues include reduced consumer purchasing power, international market difficulties, and the need to narrow the price gap between what producers receive and what consumers pay.

In the wine sector, regional councilor Nicola Gatta has called for urgent action to address a crisis characterized by a lack of certified production. While some Italian regions see nearly 99% of vineyards dedicated to DOP certified products, Puglia currently stands at only 13%. Proposed solutions include updating vineyard registries, incentivizing high-quality IGP/DOP production through regional and EU funds, and potentially requesting EU aid for the removal of vineyards in areas facing severe market difficulties.
