Puglia approves Phase 2 of medical waiting list reduction plan

The Puglia Regional Council has approved Phase 2 of its experimental plan to reduce medical waiting lists. This follows a successful Phase 1, which saw 231,435 citizens recalled and 157,176 medical services recovered, surpassing the initial target of 124,320.

To support this next stage, the regional government is allocating 20 million euros to fund additional outpatient services, specifically targeting urgent priority classes U and B. The plan establishes strict maximum waiting times for first access: 72 hours for class U, 10 days for class B, 30 days for class D visits, 60 days for class D diagnostics, and 120 days for class P.

New regulations for prescriptions have also been introduced. Urgent prescriptions will now have expiration limits: 5 days for code U and 15 days for code B. Additionally, doctors must specify the diagnostic question and distinguish between first-time and follow-up access. The plan includes facilitated pathways for oncology patients and those with rare diseases or other vulnerabilities.
