Puglia wine industry faces crisis due to high surpluses

The wine industry in Puglia is facing a significant crisis characterized by high production quality but severe market saturation. During a meeting in Brindisi between Confagricoltura Puglia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests, representatives highlighted that regional wineries are currently holding between 4.28 and 5 million hectoliters of unsold wine.

This surplus, combined with rising production and energy costs, is putting immense pressure on company liquidity and grape prices. The lack of demand in domestic and European markets has created a bottleneck that threatens to obstruct new production. Confagricoltura Puglia president Antonello Bruno has proposed a three-axis plan to address the issue: ensuring accurate vineyard data, managing surpluses, and reinforcing production quality and legality.

To alleviate the pressure, the organization is calling for immediate crisis measures, specifically requesting the authorization of emergency distillation. They pointed to similar interventions in Germany as a potential model to help clear stocks and restore balance between supply and demand.
