Pumas released into the mountains of Miranda, Cauca

A female puma and her cub were released back into the mountains of Miranda, Cauca, on October 12, 2026, following a successful rescue and rehabilitation process. The two Puma concolor specimens were initially spotted near residential areas in the Cañas Arriba district, where they faced threats from domestic dogs and potential hunting.

The rescue and subsequent release were made possible through a collaborative effort involving the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Cauca (CRC), the Cali Department of Environmental Management (Dagma), the Mayor's Office of Miranda, and local indigenous and peasant communities. After receiving specialized veterinary care in Cali and passing medical and behavioral assessments, the animals were returned to their natural habitat at an altitude of over 2,050 meters above sea level.

Authorities noted that the operation aimed to promote coexistence between local human populations and regional wildlife, highlighting the importance of protecting endangered species when they encounter inhabited zones.
