Punacancha forest fire destroys 12 hectares in Cusco

A forest fire in the Punacancha community, located in the San Sebastián district of Cusco, destroyed approximately 12 hectares of natural coverage. The fire affected eucalyptus trees, chachacomo saplings, and natural pastures.

The incident, reported on September 4, was allegedly caused by agricultural burning activities that escalated due to strong wind gusts. Emergency response teams, including local security, firefighters from Company No. 116, and Punacancha residents, worked for several hours to extinguish the flames. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Local authorities in San Sebastián have issued a call for greater responsibility among farmers, noting that uncontrolled stubble burning poses a risk to local flora, fauna, and community safety. They also reminded citizens that causing forest fires is an environmental crime under Peruvian law.
