Forest fires in Peru

Overview

Forest fires have impacted various regions in Peru, affecting both cultural heritage sites and natural landscapes.

In August, a fire threatened the Huánuco Pampa archaeological center, a National Cultural Heritage site in the Dos de Mayo province. Although authorities initially suppressed the flames, wind and dry ichu grass caused the blaze to reactivate. Reports indicated that damage was limited to the area’s vegetation cover.

In September, a fire in the Punacancha community within the San Sebastián district of Cusco destroyed approximately 12 hectares of natural coverage, including eucalyptus trees and pastures. The incident was allegedly caused by agricultural burning that escalated due to strong winds. Local authorities noted that uncontrolled stubble burning is an environmental crime and called for greater responsibility among farmers.
