Puncak Regency government offices burned during village fund protests

Protests regarding the distribution of village funds escalated into violence in Ilaga, Puncak Regency, Central Papua, on Tuesday evening, August 11, 2026. A mob burned several government buildings, including the offices of the Regent, the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), Civil Registry (Dukcapil), Social Services, Health Services, and the Village Community Empowerment Office (PMK).

The unrest reportedly began after the first regular phase of the 2026 village fund distribution. Tensions rose when protesters questioned promised funds of approximately Rp130 million per village that had not yet been received. During the escalation, the Inspectorate office was looted, and a government vehicle belonging to the Food Security department was also destroyed by fire.

Security forces from the TNI and Polri have been deployed to tighten security and conduct patrols to prevent further disturbances. Police are currently investigating the exact causes and identifying those involved in the arson and looting.
