Overview

Protests in Puncak Regency, Central Papua, escalated into violence following dissatisfaction with the distribution of village funds. On August 11, 2026, a mob burned several government buildings in Ilaga, including the offices of the Regent, the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), and various social and health service departments. During the unrest, the Inspectorate office was looted and a government vehicle was destroyed.

As the situation developed, reports indicated that 11 government buildings were targeted. Local youth leader Natan Kuwan attributed the unrest to central government decisions to reduce village funds for efficiency. Kuwan argued that Papua requires accelerated development to address ongoing social, economic, and educational challenges, rather than efficiency-driven measures.
