Pune Airport: Cannabis worth Rs 1 crore seized in cosmetic jars

Customs officials at Pune International Airport seized 1.243 kg of suspected cannabis extract, valued at approximately Rs 1 crore, from a female passenger arriving from Bangkok. The passenger arrived on Air India Express flight IX-241 on the evening of October 1.

Officers from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Pune Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted the passenger following behavioral profiling and the screening of suspicious check-in baggage. A detailed search conducted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, revealed the substance concealed within three branded cosmetic jars. Two jars were labeled ‘Rice & Yolk Hair Treatment’ and the third was marked ‘Body Scrub’.

Authorities described the substance as a waxy, semi-solid material with a strong odor. Preliminary testing with a Narcotic Drug Field Testing Kit confirmed the presence of cannabis. The passenger has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the contraband.
