Narcotics seizures and cultivation crackdowns in India
Overview
Law enforcement agencies in eastern and central India have conducted significant narcotics seizures involving cannabis.
In Odisha, Sonpur Police seized over 12.5 quintals of ganja, valued at approximately ₹13 crore, during a raid on a truck as part of the “Nishamukta Odisha Abhiyan” initiative. While the suspects fled the scene, the vehicle and contraband were confiscated.
Following this, in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, police intercepted a scooter transporting 23.27 kilograms of cannabis intended for distribution in Raipur. One suspect from Odisha, identified as 19-year-old Amit Sahu, was apprehended, while an accomplice, Shankar Yadav, escaped. Authorities seized the drugs along with a scooter and a mobile phone.
Recent operations have expanded to include both transportation interdiction and the destruction of cultivation sites. In Kerala, Hemambika Nagar Police arrested six individuals from Odisha at the Olavakkode railway station for allegedly transporting 53 kg of ganja by train.
In Odisha, Koraput police raided a 10-acre forest area near Disariguda and Lenziguda villages, arresting three farmers for tending to cannabis plants. During the operation, police destroyed approximately 12,000 plants and seized farming tools and urea fertilizer. Officials stated these actions align with a zero-tolerance policy against illegal cannabis cultivation and transportation.
