The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, held a ceremony in Chandigarh on 24 May 2026 to honour 87 Maharaja Ranjit Singh awardees and 1,070 medal‑winning athletes. Fourteen Indian hockey players, including captain Harmanpreet Singh, received the prestigious award, with Singh saying the recognition will inspire young sportspersons.

The state announced prize money totalling ₹32.05 crore, granting ₹1 crore each to Olympic and Asian Games medallists, jobs to nine medal‑winning players, and ₹8.61 crore to 220 athletes for tournament preparation. A record sports budget of ₹1,763 crore for 2026‑27 will fund the development of 3,148 rural sports grounds at a cost of ₹1,300 crore. Punjab will also host the Asian Champions Trophy for the first time, featuring an India‑Pakistan clash on Punjab Day.
