Punjab expands women cash aid and education reforms

Entities: Punjab · Government of Punjab · Vardhman Textiles Group · NITI Aayog · Bhagwant Mann

Overview

The Punjab government’s “Chief Minister Mavaan‑Dhiyaan Satkar” scheme, launched on 30 June, transferred the full ₹1,147 crore allocation to the bank accounts of roughly 3.3 million women. Scheduled‑Caste beneficiaries received three instalments of ₹4,500 each, while other adult women were credited ₹3,000. Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said the assistance adds a new layer of social security without affecting existing pensions.

The Punjab Police has continued to expand gender‑sensitive policing. Women Help Desks now operate in all 424 police stations, having logged 231,000 complaints on crimes against women and children since 2023. The force has deployed 848 women officers and introduced 93 electric scooters to improve outreach and response times.

In July 2026 the force launched the “Saanjh Rahat Kendra” network, opening four centres in Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Each centre began with two trained counsellors and now hosts a larger staff. Over the past two years the centres screened 1,656 cases, formally recorded 1,069 incidents, and intervened in situations ranging from marital‑abuse threats to medical emergencies, even facilitating employment for survivors.

On 26 July 2026, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that from 1 August the state will again transfer direct cash payments of ₹3,000 to adult women and ₹4,500 to Scheduled‑Caste women, extending the programme to about 3.7 million beneficiaries. Mann also highlighted Punjab’s rise to the top of primary and middle‑school performance in India, citing modernised school infrastructure, smart classrooms, teacher‑training programmes and a new Rs 5 crore school block funded by the Vardhman Textiles Group. Both the cash‑transfer expansion and the education reforms are presented as part of a broader effort to reduce poverty and empower citizens.
