Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz cites provincial borders as primary terrorism threat

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has stated that the province faces greater security threats from neighboring Pakistani provinces than from neighboring countries. Speaking at the launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Lahore, she noted that terrorism often enters Punjab through provincial borders and highlighted vulnerabilities including organized crime, ethnic and religious conflicts, and drug trafficking.

To combat these threats, the provincial government has invested billions of rupees in technology. The new AI Intelligence Hub is intended to facilitate real-time information sharing, threat anticipation, and intelligence fusion. Nawaz Sharif reported that security measures, such as upgrading joint check posts with thermal imaging, night-vision cameras, and bulletproof equipment, have contributed to a decline in crime.

Her remarks have sparked significant political controversy, drawing condemnation from leaders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other regions. Critics have accused the statement of fueling provincialism. In response, Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb stated that the comments were being taken out of context and that the Chief Minister was specifically addressing the inter-provincial movement of terrorists.

In a separate development related to provincial governance, the Punjab administration has suspended 37 Civil Defence officers and dismissed 12 others as part of an anti-corruption drive ordered by the Chief Minister.
