Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann honors 1,070 athletes and unveils record sports budget

On 24 May 2026 in Chandigarh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann presented cash awards totalling ₹32.05 crore to 87 Maharaja Ranjit Singh award winners and 1,070 medal‑winning sportspersons. The ceremony also announced that Punjab will host the Asian Champions Trophy, with a high‑voltage India‑Pakistan match scheduled for 1 Nov on Punjab Day.

Mann detailed a new sports development plan that includes a ₹1,763 crore budget for 2026‑27, the construction of 3,148 rural sports fields at a cost of ₹1,300 crore, and an ₹8.61 crore fund for tournament preparation for 220 athletes. Olympic and Asian Games medalists will receive ₹1 crore each, and nine medalists have been offered government jobs. The announcements aim to expand Punjab’s sports ecosystem from villages to the international arena.
