The Punjab government transferred Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar on August 7, 2026, appointing DIG Harmanbir Singh as his replacement. The move came days after Bhullar announced the bust of two ISI‑backed terror modules, the arrest of nine suspects – including four juveniles – and the seizure of weapons and four petrol bombs. In a press briefing, Bhullar said some of the arrested individuals had visited Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to reconnoitre the protest site and planned to target protesters with petrol bombs.

Political leaders condemned the transfer. Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said officers who prevent crimes should be rewarded, not penalised. Congress leader Raj Kumar Verka called the transfer "politically motivated" and demanded an inquiry. BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu alleged the removal was linked to AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s involvement in the alleged plot and pledged to investigate if his party came to power. The Punjab government later clarified that Bhullar’s remarks had been selectively edited and did not link the suspects to the protesters.
