Chile frontal system school suspensions emergency aid La Araucanía

An intense frontal system swept central and southern Chile, causing heavy rains, floods, landslides and power outages. The disaster left two people dead, more than 6,200 residents isolated and thousands of homes damaged across regions such as La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Bío Bío and the Maule.

Authorities suspended classes in numerous communes, including Angol, Constitución, Traiguén, Temuco and others, to protect students and staff. The government deployed the army, Carabineros and emergency agencies to the hardest‑hit areas, notably Putú in the Maule region, where officials coordinated relief and began a census of affected families.

Governor René Saffirio announced a proposal to transfer up to 347 million Chilean pesos to each of the 32 municipalities in La Araucanía, a total of 11.104 billion pesos, to fund recovery and support services. Emergency works also included a landslide clearance on Route 5 near the San Antonio bridge in Ancud, a bridge closure on Route I‑150 at kilometre 11 in O’Higgins, and the construction of 210 metres of gabion walls along the Coyanco stream to protect vulnerable houses.
