Overview

Late July 2026 saw weak tornadoes damage homes in Ñuble and flood Chillán and parts of Coquimbo. On 1 August the Chilean Meteorological Directorate warned of possible tornado‑like clouds in Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos, citing an EF‑1 tornado that had struck Chillán Viejo earlier in the week. University of Tarapacá researcher Oliver Meseguer explained that the rare winter tornadoes require warm, humid surface air, cold air aloft and a strong Coriolis effect, and warned that climate change could make such events more frequent and intense.

That same day a powerful frontal system swept central and southern Chile, bringing heavy rain, landslides, floods and power outages across La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Bío Bío and Maule. Two people died, more than 6,200 residents were isolated and thousands of homes were damaged. Authorities suspended classes in numerous communes and deployed the army, Carabineros and emergency agencies to the hardest‑hit areas, including Putú in Maule, where a census of affected families began.

Governor René Saffirio proposed transferring up to 347 million pesos to each of the 32 municipalities in La Araucanía—totaling about 11.1 billion pesos—to fund recovery. Emergency works included landslide clearance on Route 5 near Ancud, a bridge closure on Route I‑150 in O’Higgins, and the construction of gabion walls along the Coyanco stream to protect vulnerable houses.
