Punta Campanella launches Green Sea project to restore seagrass
The ‘Green Sea’ project has launched in the Baia di Ieranto, located within the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, to restore damaged seabed habitats. The initiative focuses on expanding Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows that were previously degraded by indiscriminate boat anchoring.
In collaboration with the International School for Scientific Diving (ISSD), the University of Genoa (DISTAV), and with support from the Deutsche Bank Italia Foundation, divers have already installed biodegradable mats and approximately 2,000 cuttings. These cuttings were collected from naturally detached plant material to ensure no impact on existing meadows. The initial intervention covers a surface area of 100 square meters.
While the bay has been a protected general reserve for nearly 30 years and currently manages maritime traffic through authorized mooring buoys, visible gaps in the vegetation remain from historical anchoring pressure. The project aims to heal these underwater scars and restore the natural habitat.
