Punta Cana collision leaves one dead and two injured

A fatal collision occurred in the early hours of Saturday on Barceló Avenue in Punta Cana, involving a garbage compactor truck and a private Kia bus.

The victim, identified as 26-year-old Wilmer Dionel Martínez Sosa, was the driver of the Mack Autocar garbage truck. Following the impact, the truck overturned, trapping Martínez Sosa underneath the vehicle. Despite rescue efforts by the Verón-Punta Cana Fire Department using specialized equipment and a crane, he was pronounced dead.

The second vehicle involved, a red Kia bus with a capacity for approximately 80 passengers, also sustained damage. Two occupants of the bus were injured. The bus driver had already been transported to a medical center by an assistance unit prior to the arrival of the fire department and was among those injured.

Emergency response teams, including the National Police, the General Directorate of Transit and Land Transport (Digesett), and medical personnel, attended the scene. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
