Somali security forces retake hijacked MT Honour 25 tanker
Security forces in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region have successfully retaken the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Honour 25 from Somali pirates. The vessel, which was carrying 18,500 barrels of fuel, had been hijacked on April 21.
During the rescue operation, five crew members were killed by the pirates. The deceased include three Pakistani nationals, one Indian national, and one Myanmar national. Additionally, four crew members—comprising three Pakistanis and one Indian—sustained injuries.
The Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) reported that 16 suspected pirates were detained during the mission, while several others managed to flee toward the coast. The operation marks a significant incident in a recent resurgence of piracy in the Horn of Africa, which experts suggest may be linked to geopolitical tensions and rising oil prices.
In a separate but related development, authorities also confirmed the rescue of the MT Eureka, a tanker hijacked in May, after pirates fled upon the approach of security forces. The recovery of these vessels follows a series of recent maritime security challenges in the region.
