Somali piracy resurgence and maritime escalation

Overview

Piracy activity off the coast of Somalia has reached a ten-year high. Data from the International Maritime Bureau indicates 13 incidents were recorded in the first seven months of 2026, significantly surpassing the eight incidents in 2024 and five in 2025. Experts attribute this resurgence to a combination of economic hardship, drought, and weak government structures.

On August 17, 2026, pirates hijacked the Cameroon-flagged cargo vessel M/V Lutuf near Mareeyo in the Eyl district of Puntland. The vessel, owned by Polar Movement Shipping, was reportedly transporting weapons intended for a Turkish military training center in Mogadishu, alongside communication and satellite equipment. The crew of ten consists of six Indians, one Turkish national, one Georgian, and two Serbian security guards.

Following the hijacking, eight pirates moved the vessel toward the Garmaal area. During a maritime standoff, an airstrike—reportedly involving Turkish helicopters and drones—occurred after a small boat delivered khat to the ship. The strike allegedly killed four men and wounded two others. While the status of the M/V Lutuf, its crew, and its cargo remains unconfirmed, the vessel is currently being held alongside the Sward and Asana as pirates demand ransom.

On August 20, 2026, a second hijacking was reported in the Gulf of Aden. Six armed individuals boarded the Eritrea-flagged Seamull tanker (also known as SIBU 1) approximately 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla, Yemen. The vessel, which was previously sanctioned by the United States for its role in Iran’s ‘shadow fleet,’ was diverted toward Somalia. The tanker is carrying 20 crew members, including 16 Indian nationals, who are reported to be safe. These escalating incidents have contributed to a rise in Brent crude oil prices.
