Sibu 1 oil tanker rescued from Somali pirates by Puntland forces

The Puntland Maritime Police Force has successfully rescued the Sibu 1, an Eritrean-flagged oil tanker, following a five-week hijacking by Somali pirates. The vessel was seized on August 20 in the Gulf of Aden, approximately 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla, Yemen, by six armed individuals.

The counter-piracy operation, which lasted approximately 48 hours, took place off the coast of the Mudug region. During the engagement, authorities reported that one suspected pirate was killed, four were wounded, and 15 others were detained. One Puntland security officer was also injured during the mission. All 20 crew members—comprising 16 Indian nationals, two Syrians, one Iraqi, and one Sudanese—were rescued safely.

The Sibu 1, previously known as the Seamull, is subject to U.S. Treasury sanctions. The vessel is alleged to be part of a “shadow fleet” used to facilitate the transport of Iranian petroleum products in violation of American sanctions. This incident occurs amid a noted resurgence of Somali piracy, with the Sibu 1 being at least the 13th vessel targeted in the region this year. Authorities noted that three other hijacked tankers—Honor 25, MT Eureka, and MT Asana—remain in the control of pirates.
