Putin’s Grip Weakens as Ukraine War Drains Russian Economy and Public Support
Bill Browder warned that Vladimir Putin cannot end the war in Ukraine without risking a popular uprising, stating the president could “be hung on a street‑light pole” if he loses power. Browder, a longtime anti‑corruption activist, argued that the war is a desperate effort to stay in office after massive theft of state assets, and that continued fighting will provoke the Russian populace, whose living standards have deteriorated.
Analysts also note that the conflict is eroding Russia’s economic and geopolitical strength. Ukraine’s drone attacks on Russian fuel depots and refineries have created a historic energy crisis, forcing rationing and imports from India. The war is depleting Russia’s workforce, fueling inflation, and accelerating dependence on China and Iran. Experts say the long‑term outlook points to a weakened, demoralised Russia facing structural problems even if the military situation stabilises.
