Pwani farmers advised to prepare for El Niño-influenced rainy season
Farmers in the Pwani region of Tanzania have been advised to prepare their fields for the upcoming Vuli rainy season, which is expected to run from October to December 2026. According to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), the season may be influenced by El Niño, leading to rainfall levels ranging from average to above average.
Mussa Nkucha, the Acting Meteorological Officer for Pwani, warned that the increased rainfall could result in high soil moisture and potential flooding. To mitigate these risks, farmers are encouraged to plant crops that are resilient to high moisture and heavy rain.
Additional recommendations include digging drainage channels and constructing protective ridges to manage excess water, prevent soil erosion, and protect soil fertility. Experts also suggest implementing technologies to prevent waterlogging, which can cause root rot, and establishing rainwater harvesting infrastructure to store excess water for future dry periods. Farmers are urged to consult with local extension officers and monitor daily weather updates to adapt to changing conditions.
