Pyrgos: Elderly man traps fraud ring, leading to arrest
A 73-year-old man in Pyrgos, Greece, successfully outmaneuvered a fraud ring by setting a trap for scammers. The incident began when a man calling himself a technician from the electricity provider, DEDDIE, contacted the elderly resident. The caller claimed that valuables needed to be removed from the premises to prevent damage during a technical fault.
Recognizing the scam, the man pretended to comply and arranged for the valuables to be left in a bag in his yard. He then contacted the police. Law enforcement officers, including units from the Pyrgos Crime Investigation Sub-directorate and the DIAS team, monitored the location. One officer hid in the yard to observe the arrival of the suspect.
A 19-year-old man from Aigio was apprehended by police as he entered the yard to collect the items. He was taken to the Ilia Police Department, and a case for fraud is being processed against him. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify other members of the criminal group.
