Qantas completes 24-hour test flight for Project Sunrise

Qantas has conducted a test flight using an Airbus A350-1000ULR to advance its Project Sunrise initiative. On July 23, 2026, the aircraft flew from Melbourne to Toulouse, lasting 24 hours and 24 minutes.

This flight, which primarily transported pilots and engineers, is part of a broader effort to establish ultra-long-haul direct connections between Sydney and cities such as London and New York. The development of high-autonomy engines and increased fuel capacity are driving the expansion of these long-distance routes.

If the program proceeds as planned, Qantas expects to deploy the aircraft for passenger service by 2027. The configured Airbus A350-1000ULR will accommodate 238 passengers across four classes: first, business, premium economy, and economy. To mitigate the physical impact of nearly 24-hour flights, the aircraft will feature a specialized wellness zone to allow passengers to stand, walk, and stretch.
