Qantas evaluates purchase of 20 new wide‑body jets

Australian carrier Qantas is in confidential talks with Airbus and Boeing about a potential order for around 20 wide‑body aircraft. Sources say the airline is weighing additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners or the main‑variant Airbus A350 as part of its ongoing fleet renewal programme, which involves about 200 aircraft.

Qantas currently operates 128 jets and holds outstanding orders for 12 Boeing 787s and 24 Airbus A350‑1000s, including 12 ultra‑long‑range variants for its "Project Sunrise" non‑stop flights to London and New York. The airline also has split‑even options for more Airbus and Boeing jets that could be exercised. A Qantas spokesperson confirmed regular contact with manufacturers but said no new orders have been announced yet.
