Qantas' Project Sunrise targets 22‑hour nonstop Sydney‑London flights

Qantas Airways is moving ahead with Project Sunrise, a plan to operate nonstop flights from Sydney to London that could last up to 22 hours. The airline is modifying two Airbus A350‑1000 ultra‑long‑range aircraft at a cost of about A$1.2 billion and will later add a Sydney‑New York service. To make the ultra‑long journeys tolerable, the cabin will feature a dedicated "wellness zone" with adjustable lighting that mimics sunrise and sunset, temperature control, scent diffusers and specially timed meals designed to support passengers' circadian rhythms. Seats in economy will have a 33‑inch pitch, with an "Economy Plus" section offering 34 inches, while first‑class will include enclosed suites with fixed beds. Qantas expects a premium fare that could boost revenue by roughly 20 % compared to one‑stop flights, targeting a high‑willingness‑to‑pay segment of business and luxury travelers. The launch has been pushed to 2027 due to supply‑chain delays and heightened geopolitical risks that could raise insurance and fuel costs. Analysts note growing demand for ultra‑long‑haul routes, with a 12 % rise in interest since February, but warn that profitability remains uncertain.
