Qantas to start longest nonstop Sydney‑London flight in 2027

Qantas announced that its Project Sunrise will launch a nonstop route between Sydney, Australia, and London, England, in October 2027. The service will be the longest passenger flight in the world, covering about 10,000 miles in 19 to 22 hours, and will operate daily.

The airline will use Airbus A350 aircraft, the first of which—named Vega—is expected to arrive in April 2024. Seats are already on sale. The cabin design includes a Wellness Zone between Premium Economy and Economy and a smart lighting system intended to reduce jet‑lag effects. After the Sydney‑London route, Qantas plans to add a nonstop Sydney‑New York service, with details to follow next year.

The launch marks a milestone for long‑haul aviation, eliminating the final stop on the historic “Kangaroo Route” that once required multiple refuelling stops. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson said the project fulfills the airline’s long‑standing goal of overcoming Australia’s geographic isolation.
