Qatar blocks Volkswagen‑Rafael Iron Dome plant deal

Qatar’s sovereign‑wealth fund, which holds about 17% of Volkswagen’s voting rights, has vetoed a proposal for the German automaker to convert its Osnabrück plant into a production site for components of Israel’s Iron Dome air‑defence system. The plan, involving Israeli defence contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, was presented as a way to keep the plant operational after car production ends in 2027 and to preserve roughly 2,300 German jobs. Qatar’s opposition stems from the lack of formal diplomatic relations with Israel and concerns about political sensitivities.

The deal’s suspension has also affected a separate transaction: the planned sale of German shipping group Hapag‑Lloyd to Israel’s ZIM was reportedly scrapped after Qatari and Saudi investors raised objections. Both developments were reported by German media outlets including Bild and Reuters, though neither Volkswagen nor Rafael has provided an official statement on a final decision.
