Qatar mediates indirect US-Iran diplomatic talks in New York
Qatar has facilitated indirect diplomatic contact between the United States and Iran on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani reported that Doha sensed a desire from both Washington and Tehran to achieve progress in negotiations.
Despite this renewed contact, significant gaps remain. A senior Iranian official noted that the two sides are still far apart, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the General Assembly, stating that Iran would not submit to external pressure.
The diplomatic efforts follow a period of heightened tension, including a collapsed ceasefire in July and military actions involving the U.S. and Iran. The conflict involves complex issues including nuclear programs, sanctions, and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
