Qatar announces major electricity infrastructure investment in Lebanon

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani visited Beirut to discuss regional stability and economic support for Lebanon. A central outcome of the visit is a major agreement to address Lebanon's electricity crisis through Qatari-funded infrastructure projects.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that Qatar will finance, implement, and operate these energy projects, ensuring no upfront investment costs are borne by the Lebanese treasury. Initial steps include a joint solar power project with TotalEnergies. Qatar has also allocated a 400 million dollar package to support Lebanon, including a 10 percent grant, aimed at bolstering the Lebanese military and state institutions.

On the security front, Al Thani warned that Hezbollah's involvement in any new regional conflict would bring severe consequences to both the group and Lebanon. He emphasized the importance of neutralizing Lebanon from potential escalations between Israel and Iran. Additionally, Qatar is coordinating with the United States on reconstruction efforts for southern Lebanon to facilitate the return of displaced persons.
