Qatar warns of catastrophic global impact if Bab el-Mandeb Strait is closed
Qatar has issued a warning that the closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would be catastrophic for the global economy. Ibrahim bin Sultan Al Hashmi, a spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the world cannot afford a blockade of this critical maritime passage, especially as the Strait of Hormuz already faces disruptions.
The warning follows the expansion of control by Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, along the Yemeni coast and several Red Sea islands, including Mokha, Dhubab, Perim, and Hanish. This increased presence allows the group to more effectively threaten commercial shipping.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a vital artery for global trade, connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Under normal conditions, approximately 10% of global maritime trade and 30% of global container traffic pass through the strait. Due to ongoing attacks, many shipping companies have already diverted to the longer and more expensive route around the Cape of Good Hope.
In response to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia is attempting to redirect some oil exports through the Red Sea. In a related development, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi have agreed that the freedom of navigation must be protected.
