Qatari official proposes Yemen reconstruction and GCC membership

Qatari official Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari has called for a comprehensive strategic vision to rebuild Yemen and support its stability, with the ultimate goal of preparing the country for future membership in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

In an article titled ‘The Arabian Peninsula is not complete without Yemen,’ Al Kuwari emphasized that Yemen is a fundamental historical, cultural, and geographical pillar of the Arabian Peninsula. He noted that Yemen’s geopolitical position overlooking the Bab al-Mandab strait makes its stability vital for Red Sea security, international navigation, and global trade.

Al Kuwari urged Yemenis to overcome divisions to rebuild state institutions and called on Saudi Arabia to lead a long-term strategic project in partnership with Yemen and regional neighbors. He even suggested that the GCC could eventually be renamed the ‘Cooperation Council of the Arabian Peninsula states’ once Yemen is integrated.

Ahmed Abdullah Al Majidi, a member of the Shura Council, expressed support for this proposal. Al Majidi stated that integrating Yemen into the GCC is a strategic necessity to face increasing regional threats and that the security of the Gulf cannot be separated from the security of Yemen and the Bab al-Mandab strait.
