Quad leaders expected to meet in Manila next month
Leaders from the United States, India, Japan, and Australia are expected to hold a summit in Manila next month on the sidelines of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the gathering aims to move beyond social interaction to announce concrete actions.
Expected agenda items include maritime security in the Indo-Pacific and cooperation regarding critical minerals. The summit would mark the first Quad leaders' meeting under the second Trump administration and the first since September 2024. The timing of the meeting is linked to the ASEAN-related events scheduled for mid-November in the Philippines.
Additionally, Quad foreign ministers are slated to meet on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Atlanta on October 30-31. The proposed summit in Manila follows previous difficulties in organizing a meeting in India due to diplomatic tensions regarding trade policies.
