Qualcomm raises Snapdragon chip prices, driving up Android phone costs

Qualcomm announced double‑digit price increases for its Snapdragon processors effective 1 September 2026, citing higher costs from AI‑data‑centre demand and soaring memory prices. The hike applies to chips supplied after that date and will affect most Android manufacturers, including Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Honor, Oppo and Redmi, as well as devices such as Windows laptops, smartwatches and AR glasses that use Snapdragon chips.

Samsung’s mobile division reported its first quarterly loss in history, despite a record profit in its chip‑making unit. The Q2 2026 results show a operating loss of about 700 billion won (≈ 3.3 billion DKK) for the mobile business, while the Device Solutions division posted a profit of 89.2 trillion won (≈ 425 billion DKK). The loss is linked to an 850 % rise in memory‑module costs over the past year and the new Qualcomm pricing, which squeezes margins on budget and mid‑range smartphones. Samsung expects further price negotiations for the next quarter. The combined effect of Qualcomm’s price hike and rising component costs is expected to be reflected in Android phone prices for models launched in late 2026 and 2027.
