Quang Tri doctors treat 2-month-old with congenital syphilis

Doctors at Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital have successfully treated a 2-month-old infant diagnosed with congenital syphilis. The infant presented with pinkish-red, dry, and peeling skin rashes on the palms, soles, and around natural orifices, along with nasal discharge and congestion.

Clinical examinations revealed jaundice, pale mucous membranes, abdominal bloating, and an enlarged liver and spleen. The mother had tested positive for syphilis after childbirth but had not received treatment.

Medical professionals warn that congenital syphilis can cause severe damage to the brain, eyes, bones, liver, and spleen if not treated promptly. They advise pregnant women to undergo regular prenatal screenings and urge parents not to self-medicate infants showing unusual skin symptoms, but to seek professional medical evaluation instead.
