Quantum computing faces scientific scrutiny and Bitcoin security debates

The quantum computing sector is facing both scientific scrutiny and increased institutional investment. Researchers at the Flatiron Institute recently published a study in Science demonstrating that classical computers could replicate certain quantum systems, challenging claims of quantum supremacy made by D-Wave Quantum.

Despite these academic challenges and recent quarterly losses for D-Wave, institutional interest remains high. Dimensional Fund Advisors significantly increased its stake in the company by 289.4% during the first quarter.

Simultaneously, the rise of quantum capabilities has reignited debates regarding Bitcoin's long-term security. Developers are proposing technical standards, such as BIP-360 and BIP-361, to protect approximately 6.9 million BTC—roughly 30% of the total supply—from potential decryption by future quantum algorithms. These proposals aim to implement quantum-resistant address schemes and a migration framework to move funds to secure structures before quantum hardware poses a systemic risk.
