Quantum computing researchers demonstrate practical advantage and improved simulation efficiency

Researchers have achieved significant milestones in quantum computing, demonstrating both improved simulation efficiency and practical quantum advantage.

IBM and University of Chicago researchers announced a demonstration of logical quantum computing that completed a complex calculation in approximately 15 minutes—a task deemed impractical for leading classical simulation methods. This experiment utilized a new design for encoded quantum circuits to encode 70 logical qubits, addressing the critical challenge of verifying the accuracy of quantum results under noise.

In a separate development, researchers from the University of Oxford, the Wigner Research Centre for Physics, and other institutions introduced the DEFEAT (Dominant Eigenstate Filtering via Eigenprobability Amplification and Thresholding) algorithm. This computational technique improves the efficiency of identifying specific energy states within quantum simulations. By using ‘twirling superoperators’ to average out noise, the algorithm allows for more practical quantum simulations in fields such as chemistry and materials science, even when the target energy level is unknown or initial signals are weak.
