Quart de Poblet monument to Francoist victims vandalized

The sculpture ‘El Pes de la Memòria’ in Quart de Poblet has been vandalized with extremist graffiti just five days after its inauguration. The monument was created by sculptor Miguel Borrego to honor fourteen local residents who were executed during the Francoist repression between 1939 and 1942.

According to local authorities, the artwork was defaced with inscriptions such as ‘Rojos no’ and ‘España’, alongside two Celtic crosses, a symbol associated with neo-Nazi and far-right groups. The sculpture includes a plaque with the names of the victims and a QR code providing historical context and biographies.

The Quart de Poblet City Council has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as ‘intolerable’. Officials stated that the monument serves as a space for dignity and democratic memory, asserting that ‘neither hate nor incivility will ever erase their memory’. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
