Quebec forestry groups urge political leaders to adopt forest industry vision
Forestry industry organizations in Quebec are calling on political leaders to establish a clear and ambitious governmental vision for the province's forests within the first 90 days of a new administration. A group of nine industry signatories, including the Fédération des producteurs forestiers du Québec and the Conseil de l’industrie forestière du Québec (CIFQ), has issued an open letter urging political parties to prioritize the sector in their electoral programs.
The proposed action plan aims to modernize the forestry regime, adapt to climate change, and develop a provincial wood industry strategy. Key recommendations include improving the predictability of fiber access, enhancing competitiveness, and ensuring a better distribution of wealth from renewable resources.
Furthermore, industry leaders are advocating for a renewed relationship with First Nations, suggesting that Indigenous communities should have greater participation in governance, decision-making regarding land management, and opportunities to benefit economically from forestry activities. Private forest owners are also seeking equitable access to wood markets and carbon markets.
