Quebec forestry industry reform and investment

Overview

The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) proposed a national forestry initiative featuring a $144 million investment to modernize factories, foster innovation, and promote Quebec wood construction. Outgoing Premier Christine Fréchette announced the plan in La Tuque, aiming to adapt forest management to regional realities and reduce industry dependence on the American market. The proposal includes pilot projects and a ‘National Forest Workshop’ to reform the forestry regime through increased regional involvement and strengthened partnerships with First Nations.

Following these proposals, nine forestry industry organizations, including the Fédération des producteurs forestiers du Québec and the Conseil de l’industrie forestière du Québec (CIFQ), issued an open letter. They urged political leaders to establish a clear governmental vision for the sector within the first 90 days of a new administration. The industry groups are advocating for a modernized regime that addresses climate change, improves fiber access predictability, and ensures better wealth distribution. They also emphasized the need for Indigenous communities to have greater participation in land management governance and economic decision-making.
