Quebec Ministry of Transport issues off-road vehicle safety rules
The Quebec Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTQ) has issued a safety reminder for off-road vehicle (ORV) users following several accidents involving ATVs, quads, and side-by-sides, particularly in the Centre-du-Québec region.
For operation on public trails, roads, or municipal lands, drivers must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver's license. Drivers aged 16 or 17 are additionally required to possess a training certificate from either the Fédération québécoise des clubs quads or the Fédération québécoise des motos hors route. Side-by-side vehicles (autoquads) have a minimum driving age of 18.
On private property, minors under 18 without a license or training certificate may operate ORVs only with parental or legal guardian authorization and must be accompanied by an authorized adult capable of providing immediate assistance. The ministry emphasizes the importance of wearing certified helmets, using full protective gear, and adhering to speed limits to reduce the risk of serious injury.
