Quebec off-road vehicle safety initiatives
Overview
Following several accidents involving ATVs, quads, and side-by-sides, particularly in the Centre-du-Québec region, the Quebec Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility issued safety reminders and regulatory requirements for off-road vehicle (ORV) users.
Regulations specify that drivers on public trails or roads must be at least 16 years old with a valid license, while side-by-side operators must be at least 18. On private property, minors require parental authorization and adult supervision. The ministry emphasized the use of certified helmets and protective gear.
Subsequently, police services across Quebec, including the Saguenay Police Service and the Association des directeurs de police du Québec, launched a national safety operation called ‘ONC Quad’. This initiative focuses on raising awareness regarding regulatory compliance, such as speed limits on trails, visibility through headlights, and the criminal consequences of impaired driving.
