Queen Maxima opens WorldPride 2026 in Amsterdam, first reigning monarch to do so

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands inaugurated WorldPride 2026 in Amsterdam, becoming the first reigning queen to officially open a Pride event. The opening ceremony was held in Vondelpark on 25 July 2024, with Mayor Femke Halsema co‑hosting and referencing ongoing LGBTQ+ rights challenges in Uganda, the United States and the United Kingdom. Maxima’s speech included the line “Can be who you are, love who you want, that’s normal.” and she wore a pink outfit while greeting participants.

Around 10,000 people walked the Pride Walk from the Dam to Vondelpark, and ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” played as she arrived. WorldPride 2026 will run until 8 August, featuring roughly 300 events across the city. The royal family also held a photo session at the Clingendael estate, during which King Willem‑Alexander highlighted concerns about violence at refugee centres.

The event marks a historic moment for the Dutch monarchy’s public support of LGBTQ+ rights and is expected to draw widespread media attention.
