Queen Máxima visits Ghana to advocate for financial health
Queen Máxima of the Netherlands is conducting a five-day visit to Ghana from November 2 to November 5, 2026, in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health. The mission focuses on enhancing financial resilience and well-being for Ghanaians, particularly through improved access to affordable credit, agricultural financing, insurance, and pensions.
During her itinerary, the Queen Consort is scheduled to meet with various stakeholders, including President John Dramani Mahama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Her engagements include visiting a farm and fruit-processing factory in the Upper West Akim District to discuss income instability, as well as meeting women traders at Makola Market in Accra to discuss savings and loan products.
The visit addresses concerns regarding financial health in Ghana. While the World Bank’s Global Findex 2025 report indicates that over 80 percent of adults in Ghana had bank or mobile money accounts in 2024, a 2021 FinScope survey found that only 22 percent of Ghanaian adults were considered financially healthy.
