Ghana launches new financial health strategy

Overview

Following a five-day mission by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in early November 2026, the Government of Ghana has officially launched the development of its second National Financial Inclusion and Development Strategy (NFIDS) for 2027–2031.

During the mission, the Queen, acting as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, met with stakeholders including President John Dramani Mahama and Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Pandit Johnson Asiama. She highlighted a significant gap in economic resilience, noting that while over 80% of Ghanaian adults hold accounts, only 22% are considered financially healthy.

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem announced the new strategy development, which marks a shift from prioritizing mere account ownership to focusing on actual financial health. The NFIDS will aim to help citizens manage daily expenses, withstand economic shocks, and build long-term savings, with specific emphasis on women, youth, farmers, and small businesses. The initiative will prioritize expanding access to affordable services, promoting digital innovation, and strengthening consumer protection.

Queen Máxima has since concluded her official visit to Ghana. Her engagements in Accra focused on promoting economic stability and financial health initiatives through meetings with government representatives and officials.

In related developments, President Mahama discussed plans for a digital wallet linked to the national identification system to widen access. Additionally, Governor Asiama highlighted the potential for virtual assets and tokenization to improve financial system efficiency and reduce transaction costs.
